Poppy
Materials: Basswood, Spalted Beech, and gold leaf
Dimensions: 12 × 12 × 20 cm
Techniques: Slow carving and gilding
A delicate balance between purity and warmth, Poppy reveals the subtle elegance of natural materials and patient craftsmanship.
The poppy seed pod, meticulously carved from a 6 cm thick slab of basswood, gradually emerged as I searched for its hidden form within the grain. Basswood is ideal for precise carving due to its softness and fine texture, yet its visual neutrality calls for contrast. This is found in Spalted Beech, a richly patterned wood whose warm tones and spontaneous lines bring depth and vitality.
The complex form of the seed pod stands in harmony with the simple, geometric clarity of the box itself. A subtle touch of gold leaf gently guides the eye toward the sculpted form, reflecting light with refined sophistication.
Together, these elements embody Poppy, a celebration of craftsmanship, form and the delicate beauty of nature.
