Monstera

Materials: Walnut, spalted beech, wool felt
Dimensions: 14 × 39.5 × 30 cm
Techniques: Slow carving, dovetail joinery

The work begins with carving an abstracted leaf of the Monstera plant. The shapes of leaves and the paths of their veins have always fascinated me. Once the leaf is carefully carved, it gradually becomes clear what additions are needed.

For this piece, the carved leaf rests atop a solid walnut box. The warm, rich walnut beautifully complements the expressive spalted beech, together creating a calm, refined composition. Curved legs made from the same spalted beech give the box a sense of lightness, balancing the weight of the materials while maintaining a serene presence.

Inside the box is a soft lining of off-white wool felt, with an illustration of the same Monstera leaf rendered in green wool felt on the base. This interior provides a gentle, tactile contrast to the robust exterior of the walnut box, adding depth and subtle surprise to the piece.
