Infinite Gaze
Materials: Basswood, oak, brass, gold leaf, mirror
Dimensions: 55 x 13 x 8 cm
Techniques: Slow carving, gilding, wood finishing
Born from the shape of a spoon, this piece gradually unfolded into something reminiscent of a sunflower.
Basswood, with its soft and pale colour, called for warmth. A touch of gold leaf brought that glow, giving the form a quiet radiance and making its curves come alive.
As the piece grew, it no longer felt like something that could lie down or hang on a wall.
It needed to stand, lifted slightly from the ground.
A slender brass rod lets the form hover gently above its base.
The oak base is treated with a mixture of vinegar and steel wool, turning it deep black while keeping the wood grain visible. This creates a grounded presence that balances the golden tones above.
At the top of the base a small mirror reveals a hidden detail.
When you look closely, you can see the gold leaf applied to the underside of the carved form, a quiet shimmer that appears only when you take the time to search for it.
Infinite Gaze invites you to look twice, and then again, finding more each time.
